The call of the Rex Foundation

The target of our foundation is to promote harmony between humans and animals, to educate about the responsibility of pet owning, to reduce the number of stray animals and stop animal suffering. Our every-day job is to maintain a high-level animal protection service through our public animal shelter office, our adoption center and animal rescue service. Our foundation’s location is a multi-functional facility, the Animal Island (Állatsziget) – short for the Budapest Animal Protection and Environment Protection Experience Park which serves educational and also promotional purposes regarding our environment, animal and a correct pet owning  culture.

The founder’s message

“As far as I can remember as a child I always longed for seemingly impossible things, but I still strongly believed that they will come true. As a teenager I had more realistic targets, but still, I had many disappointments. As a grown-up I handled my ambitions more subtly, just to save myself from disappointment.
However, when it comes to animals, I am passionate. I dream about a world where animals are treated well. This is our Animal Island where we not only treat animals fairly, but we also teach others how to treat them. With the realisation of the Rex Foundation, a childhood dream came true.  I consider myself lucky, as I have so many helping hands in this dream, while our opponents are few. According to Albert Wass (Hungarian novelist and poet) we have to grow into a child in order to grow into an adult. Therefore I recall the times, when I was accepting every human contact with an open heart, without any mistrust. We need this approach, as this is the time, to believe in an idea as an adult, what helps us to find true friends without any artifical emotions or negativness, who want only to make our world a better place!

Dr. Péter Király, founder.”’

Contacts at the REX Dog Shelter

Since the REX Dog Shelter was founded, the organization is an active member of animal protection movements. In the last few years thanks to our colleagues' and volunteers’ hard work, the foundation’s services have broadened and have been rewarded in many areas of animal protection. Our customer service is available on +36 1 230-4080, +36 1 435-0533.

Considering the fact that we receive 40-50 calls per day, our lines are often busy, we kindly ask for your patience.

Animal Island’s opening hours: from Tuesday till Sunday from 10am till 4pm.

Animal Island location

33 Óceánárok st. Budapest 1048.
300 hundred meters from the bus stop „Óceánárok utca” (take the bus number 30 from Újpest Központ metro station) or by car till the crossing of Óceánárok and Megyeri streets.

Animal Protection Office

Our well-prepared colleagues at our public animal protection office on the Animal Island can assist with any animal protection issues in person or by phone (during opening hours) or via internet.

Stray animal accomodation

Our organization's animal campus is limited. In our animal-adoption center we can allocate space to 100-120 dogs and 40-60 cats at the same time in a safe and clean environment.  Even though we advertise our animals for adoption or re-homing, we receive more animals than we can give up for adoption. Therefore we barely have free space and regrettably, we can take in only a few new stray animals at any one time.

Our animal rescue service

Our animal service was founded in 2000 and we operate daily and also in emergency situations (like flooding) to help animals in need. Apart from this, we regularly bring pet food, cat litter and medicines for poverty-stricken pet owners or temporary foster parents. Every year we donate food, equipment and medicines to animal protection partner organizations and pet owners in need.

Our neutering campaigns

In the last 15 years our neutering campaigns contributed to sterilize more than 9000 feral cats who were breeding without control and approximately 5000 homed stray dogs.

Our educational programs

Our foundation provides regular animal protection workshops where the audience can familiarize itself with animal needs and the most common animal protection issues. In the last 6 years our workshop scope has broadened (school classes, field classes, summer camps etc.) and through this training we try to lay the baseline for responsible pet care.
